"We have an opportunity to really make a significant change in the auto industry."LaSorda said Nardelli is a strong manager who has helped companies grow and he is happy to be working with him."He's always been a winner, every business," LaSorda said.

Democrats Call on Government to Increase Minority Advertising Contracts

Today, leading Senate and House Democrats urged federal agencies to take an active role in increasing the amount of federal advertising contracts awarded to disadvantaged and minority-owned businesses. Their action comes in response to a report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to be released today that found that federal agencies are falling short of the standards set by an executive order issued in 2000 calling on the government to "aggressively" reach out to minority and underserved firms.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-Mass.), senior Senate Judiciary Committee member Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), and Congressional Black Caucus Chair, Representative Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-Mich.) today sent letters to the Departments of Defense and the Treasury expressing concern for their poor record of awarding contracts to minority and disadvantaged businesses and requesting the agencies outline specific steps they are taking to increase contracts with minority advertising firms.

Tourism numbers patchy

Visitors to Halls Gap may be looking sparse at present, but operators are not panicking as it has been a `patchy' summer.

With last year's month-long non trading period due to the Grampians Bushfire still firm in traders' memories any business is good business.

Northern Grampians Shire Council tourism manager Angie Lush said that tourist numbers had declined over past weeks.

"What we've been finding is a slight drop during December in visitation," Ms Lush said.

"In the first few weeks of January, people were coming more.

"Some people have had good days, some bad days. It's hard to establish a pattern.

"Going by what the retailers and accommodation providers have said business has been patchy."

Melissa Griffin from the Halls Gap Caravan Park said that business was quiet at present, but would soon pick up.

Pair of state-chartered banks being organized

A group of investors that includes former Gov. John H. Sununu is now in the process of organizing a new community bank that will serve the Seacoast region and southern Maine, the group's lead organizer said.

And another group of bank backers wants to establish state-chartered The Nashua Bank in Nashua.

The Seacoast bank, once it is set up, will be known as the Optima Bank and Trust Co. and have its headquarters at Two Harbour Place in Portsmouth. The institution is now going through the regulatory approval process before the New Hampshire Banking Department and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. However, organizers are hopeful they'll soon be able to sell shares in the new endeavor, and the bank could be open as soon as this fall.

"There has been a lot of consolidation in the banking business in New Hampshire.

Chrysler boss' salary a mystery

Opportunity knocked, and Robert Nardelli missed it. If he really wanted to begin rehabilitating his tarnished reputation, he could have started his CEO job at Chrysler by publicly promising he wouldnt accept a penny in pay.

Instead, the former Home Depot CEO who left the home improvement retail chain in January with a controversial $210 million severance package stayed mum on what he would be making while trying to lead struggling Chrysler out of its funk.

Chrysler officials fed the media tidbits about his $1 a year salary. But they refused to provide details about any performance-based bonus Nardelli could collect should he manage to help reverse the automakers slide.
