Chrysler got a taste of its new owner's swift and decisive style Monday as its chief executive was demoted and the former head of Home Depot was tapped to lead the automaker through a major restructuring. Bob Nardelli, who left The Home Depot Inc. in January after a shareholder rebellion over his outsized pay, was named chairman and chief executive of Chrysler LLC, replacing Tom LaSorda, who is taking the No. 2 slot. The changes came just three days after the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP acquired a majority stake in Chrysler. "The new Chrysler has the opportunity to prove that the private business model can thrive in this industry," Nardelli said. "We have an opportunity to really make a significant change in the auto industry." LaSorda said Nardelli is a strong manager who has helped companies grow and he is happy to be working with him.

Coming here may seem like questionable judgment, but for a person who's favorite novel is George Orwell's 1984 the lure was irresistible.

Jens Voigt took the lead in the overall classification of the Tour of Germany on Saturday, thanks to a strong team time trial by his CSC squad. Voigt recaptured the yellow leader's jersey which he brought home from last year's Deutschland Tour by one second over team-mate Fabian Cancellara, who actually crossed the finish line first. That one second came when Voigt sprinted out of the peloton on the third intermediate sprint in Friday's opening stage. "I went for the bonus yesterday because you never know. In '99 I won the Criterium International by two-tenths of a second. You will always regret not taking such opportunities." He called the team time trial course "a hard course, it went up right from the beginning! The second part was flatter on good, wide roads." He was glad, too, that his team's main rival Discovery Channel started ahead of them.
Trestman: Reflections on my relationship with Bill Walsh
When I was an assistant coach with the Minnesota Vikings in 1986, the San Francisco 49ers asked permission to interview me for the quarterbacks coaching position under Bill Walsh. The Vikings turned them down and my chance to learn under Coach Walsh was put on hold. Then, in 1989, I was the offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns and had the good fortune to cross paths with Coach Walsh in a TV production meeting when he was an analyst for NBC. I had a number of questions for him and was amazed at his patience. His responses were different from any coach I had ever spoken to. His ability to communicate the science of the game in a unique and articulate fashion was incredible. After leaving the meeting I humbly asked him if I could come out and visit with him when time permitted.

Elvis Presley, the man who jump-started the rock-and-roll revolution from a tiny Memphis recording studio in 1954 and went on to become the world's most recognizable entertainer, died Monday, August 6th, of cardiac arrest, at his Horn Lake, Mississippi, home. He was 72 years old. It had been six years since an earlier heart attack sent the man many called "The King" into a mini-retirement and 30 years since a drug overdose threatened his life, then in chaos, and forever altered his career: cleaning up, breaking from his iron-fisted manager, "Colonel" Tom Parker, and withdrawing from the music world for several years. Upon his return to public life in the 1980s, Presley mixed sporadic but high-profile concert and record appearances with a series of non-music business ventures, including an ownership stake in the NFL Memphis Hound Dogs.
