Kraintz says "parallel street" could help

Manchester wants to revitalize its Historic Town Center commercial and retail area, south and north of Manchester Road between Highway 141 and Sulphur Springs Road. And an initial conceptual proposal presented to the Board of Aldermen calls for a secondary 3,000-foot "parallel street" in the area of Second and Park streets, just south of and parallel to Manchester Road, to allow better access to businesses and to allow customers to avoid traffic snarls on Manchester.Franz Kraintz, the city's director of planning, zoning and economic development, told the board July 16 a revitalization plan stems from the city's 2003 comprehensive plan and is geared to pursue economic opportunity in the city's commercial corridor. He said the new road would create a "main street" within a proposed central business district that would have street-level retail stores with offices or homes on second and third stories. An entry, or "slip" ramp, could lead to the new road from Manchester and allow traffic to slow down when entering the parallel road, "which would be our Historic District gateway, featuring open space and plazas, and wide sidewalks and a lot of landscaping," Kraintz said.

Chrysler chief's reputation still in rags

NEW YORK–Opportunity knocked, and Robert Nardelli missed it.

If he had really wanted to begin rehabilitating his tarnished reputation, he could have started his CEO job at Chrysler by publicly promising he wouldn't accept a penny in pay.

Instead, the former Home Depot chief executive officer, who left the home-improvement retail chain in January with a controversial $210 million (U.S.) severance package, stayed mum on what he would be making while he tries to lead struggling Chrysler out of its funk.

Chrysler officials fed the media tidbits about his $1 a year salary. But none would provide details about any performance-based bonus Nardelli could collect if he managed to help reverse the automaker's slide.

Technically, Chrysler and Nardelli had no obligation to talk about his pay at all.

Chrysler gets a new driver

Chrysler got a taste of its new owner's swift and decisive style Monday as its chief executive was demoted and the former head of Home Depot was tapped to lead the automaker through a major restructuring.

Bob Nardelli, who left The Home Depot Inc. in January after a shareholder rebellion over his outsized pay, was named chairman and CEO of Chrysler LLC, replacing Tom LaSorda, who is taking the No. 2 slot. The changes came three days after private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP acquired a majority stake in Chrysler.

"The new Chrysler has the opportunity to prove that the private business model can thrive in this industry," Nardelli said. "We have an opportunity to ... make a significant change in the auto industry."

LaSorda said Nardelli is a strong manager who has helped companies grow and he is happy to be working with him.

Gaza facing economic disaster, U.N. warns

The Gaza Strip will soon become entirely dependent on foreign aid and face "disastrous consequences" if the Hamas-run territory remains sealed off, the U.N. warned on Thursday.

A Palestinian business group, meanwhile, estimated that at least 120,000 Gazans could lose their jobs if the closure continues.

Israel and Egypt closed their crossings with Gaza to all but humanitarian aid after the Islamic militant group Hamas violently seized power in the coastal strip in June, exacerbating the poverty among the 1.4 million residents.

However in a special case, Israel on Thursday allowed the last of more than 6,300 Palestinians stranded in Egypt since the closure to return home to Gaza. The military said the last 475 crossed the Egypt-Israel border at Nitzana in the Negev desert, and were then escorted to the Israel-Gaza border at Erez, about 43 miles to the north to end an 11-day operation.

India's outsourcers move to the next level

MUMBAI - "Join the competition before it becomes serious competition" seems to be the hot new strategy for India's business processes outsourcing (BPO) industry, with global leaders such as Wipro - India's third-largest software company - setting up its own BPO centers in countries such as China, Romania, the United States and Egypt.

The seller turning buyer gives an intriguing twist to the global outsourcing business, worth US$930 billion last year and

expected to grow at 15% annually to amass $1.4 trillion by 2009 and dominated by India. That domination is under threat, and the empire is striking back.

T K Kurien, Wipro's chief executive officer for BPO, told the media that his company is setting up two Chinese BPO centers, in Shanghai and Chengdu, to provide accounting and financial services by next month.
